Developed in collaboration with WolfBrown, the Bay Area Film Production Memo, published by BAVC Media on July 10, 2024, outlines strategies to enhance local film production in the Bay Area, emphasizing economic and social benefits. The research was supported by various local organizations and is divided into two parts: a Bay Area Filmmaker Survey and a Lessons from the Field interview project.
Key findings include:
- A significant portion of filmmakers feel uncertain about their future in the Bay Area.
- Many filmmakers experience career stagnation, with documentary filmmakers faring better financially than narrative filmmakers.
- The study highlights the importance of incentives, workforce development, and infrastructure to support the local film industry.
The research has already influenced local policy, notably contributing to the passage of a Film Rebate Program in Oakland. The memo emphasizes the importance of community collaboration and strategic planning to grow the Bay Area’s film sector.
